Suspect in chase later found dead, officials say

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WLS) -- There were cheers and a salute Friday for an Indiana State Police sergeant who was released from a hospital after being shot in the line of duty.
Sgt. Justin Heflin walked out of a hospital a week after he was shot while pursuing a suspect accused of stealing a vehicle from a Michigan City dealership.
Police chased the suspect, Kevin Meyers, to a gas station near Michigan City, where Sgt. Heflin was injured in a shootout.
State police said Meyers was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Sgt. Heflin, a 12-year veteran of the Indiana State Police, was recovering after a successful surgery at a hospital in South Bend. Heflin also served in the United States Marine Corps, ISP said.
