Officer no longer employed by department

ITASCA, Ill. (WLS) -- The ABC7 Chicago I-Team has learned a village of Itasca police officer is out of a job following potential misuse of a controversial law enforcement technology.
In response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the I-Team for records into misuse of Flock automated license plate readers, the village of Itasca posted a statement on its website disclosing a recent investigation.
Village officials said during an internal audit of the Itasca Police Department, officials discovered that a law enforcement officer allegedly used the department's technology systems "for a purpose that was not authorized."
"Upon learning of these actions, the Village immediately placed the involved officer on administrative leave while it conducted an internal investigation," the village said. "The officer is no longer employed by the Itasca Police Department, and per department policy, the matter was turned over to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office for review."
The officer accused of misusing the Flock technology was not identified, and a village administrator said no further information could be released at this time.
The Itasca Police Department has operated Flock automated license plate readers since at least September 2025.
The I-Team has been covering the debate over law enforcement's use of Flock and other license plate reader technology amid privacy concerns.
Flock Safety recently announced it is making changes to its platform that it says are intended to quell privacy concerns and address documented abuses of its system by some members of law enforcement.
