19-year-old pleads guilty to DUI in north suburban crash that killed teen brother, sister

MCHENRY, Ill. (WLS) -- A 19-year-old Fox River Grove man pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol in a high-speed crash that killed two teens last summer, the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office said Thursday.

Jason Land is set to be sentenced Oct. 9.

On July 28, 2025, at about 12:20 a.m., Land was driving a 2012 Audi A4 south on Richmond Road toward the intersection of Richmond Road and McCollum Lake Road in McHenry, the state's attorney's office said.

Land was driving close to 100 mph, officials said.

At the same time, a Nissan Sentra driven by an 18-year-old woman, with her 14-year-old brother as a passenger, was traveling through the intersection with the right of way.

Police previously said the woman was 19.

Land's vehicle hit the Nissan, officials said.

The woman, later identified as Perla Tejeda, was trapped inside the car, and her brother was ejected from the vehicle.

Both teens died on the scene from their injuries.

Land was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, where he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.28, officials said.

"This case is a devastating reminder of the irreversible consequences that can result from the decision to drink and drive," State's Attorney Randi Freese said. "Two young lives were taken in an instant because of a completely preventable act. No sentence can restore these children to their family or erase the unimaginable loss their loved ones continue to endure. Our office will continue to stand with the victims' family and will seek a sentence that reflects the extraordinary gravity of this tragedy."
