Man charged with hate crime after DeKalb machete attack, police say

DEKALB, Ill. (WLS) -- A machete-wielding man is facing a hate crime charge after trying to kill someone over money, police said.

DeKalb police responded to the 800-block of Edgebrook Drive just before 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

There, officers found a male victim who had suffered a severe injury to his right forearm.

Police said Joshua Boyer approached an officer and admitted to attacking the victim, who he was living with, with a machete over money. Witnesses told police Boyer made racial epithets toward the victim during the attack and threatened to kill him.

Officers and fire officials treated the victim, whose age was not immediately known, before he was transported to the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital.

Police recovered the machete used in the attack.

Boyer was transported to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office to await a detention hearing. He is facing attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery, and hate crime charges.

Authorities did not immediately provider further information.
