Visitation held for 10-year-old Kate Schmidt, killed in Geneva Lake boat capsizing

CHICAGO (WLS) -- This is a moment no family can prepare for and a moment no parent dares to imagine.

But this is the heart-breaking reality for Kathryn Schmidt's loved ones. And the support surrounding this family has been immense.

Dozens of people came through the Moss Family Funeral Home in Batavia for the 10-year-old's visitation on Monday.

According to an obituary for Kathryn on the funeral home's website, Kathryn, better known as Kate, was known for her "bright, bubbly personality" and contagious smile.

The 10-year-old is also remembered as a loving daughter, a devoted sister, a talented singer, and a standout tennis player who "had a remarkable ability to make others feel welcome, valued, and loved."

Kate was one three children killed when a boat capsized during storms on July 3 on Geneva Lake.

The other two children killed were her cousins, 7-year-old Abigail Oswald and 6-year-old Caleb Oswald.

The National Weather Service said winds reached up to 100 mph during the storm.

Abigail and Caleb Oswalds' visitations will take place on Wednesday at the Danada House in Wheaton at 3S501 Naperville Road in Wheaton from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Online fundraisers for both families have already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A GoFundMe page has raised more than $139,000 in honor of Kate.

A fundraiser for Abigail and Caleb Oswald has raised more than $297,000.
