A preliminary investigation indicates that a 38-year-old Wisconsin woman was driving a Nissan Rogue eastbound on Route 173.

She then made a left turn into Van Patton Woods Forest Preserve, directly in the path of a 68-year-old Wadsworth man, who was driving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on Route 173, the sheriff's office said.

The motorcyclist was thrown off when the two vehicles collided. His left leg was severed from the impact, and he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The Nissan's driver was uninjured and is cooperating with the investigation.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Team is investigating. Officials did not immediately provide further information about the crash.
