Metra testing out pilot ticketing program at downtown stations

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Metra will be rolling out a new pilot program aimed at changing how riders board trains.

Some passengers at downtown stations will be asked to show their Ventra ticket or paper ticket before boarding.

The goal is to test new handheld scanners designed to speed up fare collection and improve efficiency.

The program will begin on off-peak trains to avoid delays and could expand if successful.
