Raleigh Police: Man's death in downtown is suicide investigation
The state's medical examiner's office is in charge of the case and will conduct a full investigation, Raleigh police say.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Raleigh Police Department (RPD) said on Monday that a man was found hanging from a tree in downtown Raleigh during the weekend.

Investigators with RPD say they confirmed the death as a suicide and that no foul play was involved.

According to police, it happened Saturday afternoon on South McDowell Street near Nash Square. After officers arrived on scene, they removed the man from the tree and initiated life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The state medical examiner's office is now in charge of the case and will conduct a full investigation, according to Raleigh police.

ABC11 typically does not report on suicides, but is reporting on this case because of where it happened and the broader historical context surrounding it.

RPD released a statement related to the man's death:
"We understand that this loss may be deeply painful for those who knew and cared about the individual. We ask everyone to please be mindful of the family and friends who are grieving and to avoid sharing unverified information or speculation while investigators continue their work."
