Driver killed, woman hurt after crashing into tree, Niles police say

NILES, Ill. (WLS) -- A man died and a woman was hurt after police said they crashed into a sign and a tree in Niles on Tuesday.

The crash happened at about 12:18 a.m. in the 7700-block of Oakton Street, Niles police said.

Police said they found a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe left the road and for an unknown reason struck a speed limit signs and crashed into a tree.

Chopper 7 was over the scene as the vehicle was being towed.

The driver, a 69-year-old man, was unconscious when police arrived and officers began CPR efforts.

The man was taken to an area hospital where he died.

A woman, 51, was a passenger in the car. She was taken to Lutheran General Hospital and was expected to be OK.

Niles police said they do not believe the driver was impaired.

Oakton Street was closed between Milwaukee Avenue and Washington Street during the investigation.
