Oak Park officer shoots, kills suspect after struggle over gun during traffic stop: police

OAK PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- An Oak Park police officer shot and killed a suspect during a struggle over a gun during a traffic stop Sunday night, police said.

An Oak Park officer pulled a black SUV over about 9:10 p.m. near Harrison Street and Austin Boulevard, police said.

The male driver was the only person in the car.

The officer performed a pat-down after asking the driver to get out of the vehicle, police said.

During the pat-down, the officer found a concealed gun, according to police.

The driver was able to grab the gun, after a struggle for control of it, police said.

That's when the officer shot the driver with his service weapon, police said.

Oak Park police rendered aid until the suspect was taken to Loyola University Medical Center. The suspect died just before 10 p.m., police said.

The officer was also taken to Loyola for injuries he suffered during the incident, but was released Monday morning.

A gun with a defaced serial number was found at the scene, police said.

The suspect has not yet been publicly identified.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation.
