Off-duty Mundelein police officer 'suddenly' dies, officials say

MUNDELEIN, Ill. (WLS) -- Mundelein police are mourning one of their officers who died "suddenly," according to village officials.

Officials have not released the officer's identity.

Vernon Hills police extended their thoughts and prayers to the Mundelein community.

"We stand beside you and offer our heartfelt support to your officers, staff, families, and the entire community," a spokesperson for Vernon Hills police said.

The Village of Mundelein did not release further information on the circumstances surrounding the officer's death.

"Right now, our focus is on supporting the family of this individual and respecting the family's privacy while they grieve the loss of their loved one," Village administrator Eric Guenther said.
