Woman seeks justice for mom killed in suburban hit-and-run on NYE

RIVERDALE, Ill. (WLS) -- Walking from the south suburban senior home she lived in to a gas station across the street was a trip to the store that Harriett Reynolds made for nearly a decade. But just hours before the new year, it became her last.

"This is just a terrible situation that happened to her, walking 1,000 feet from her home," said Consuela Vernor, Reynolds' daughter. "I feel so bad, because I feel like she was alone, and she didn't have nobody there with her."

Vernor's plans to begin this new year were shattered before its arrival.

"I was right here, and my mom was right here watching Netflix, and you mean to tell me the next day, I don't have my mother!?" Vernor said.

Just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Vernor says her mother left her home at Our Savior's Senior Housing and headed to a nearby gas station at 146th and Indiana in Riverdale.

"She was going in the gas station, and a car ran in the gas station, ran her over and drove off," Vernor said. "And, I don't know, it was New Year's Eve, if they were drinking or not, but you left my mama like a dog in the street to die."

The crash left Vernor, an only child, to be her mother's voice.

"She didn't have her identification. She was thinking she was going to come to the store and come right back home," Vernor said. "Mama, I love you with all my heart, and I'm going to miss you. Oh, Jesus Lord. And I'm going to get justice for you."

On Wednesday, police initially told ABC7 that a person was taken in for questioning, but one day later, they said, no one is in custody.
