Perseid meteor shower peaks as astronomers spot rare comet, black hole collision

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Perseid meteor shower peaks Friday night into Saturday morning, with up to 100 meteors an hour visible from dark areas, says Dr. Michael Zevin of Chicago's Adler Planetarium.

Zevin also highlighted a newly discovered interstellar comet, only the third ever found, passing safely through the solar system, and the detection of a massive black hole collision billions of light-years away, observed through gravitational waves.

"It's a big week for space," Zevin said. "These events remind us how dynamic our universe is."
