CHICAGO (WLS) -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Purple Hose and Healing Foundation will host a gala to promote solutions to end intimate partner abuse.
PHHF is hosting its second annual Purple Awards and Scholarship Gala on October 9 at the Odyssey Venue in Tinley Park.
If you need help or know someone in need of help, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline for confidential support 24/7/365. The number is 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). You can also text the word "START" to 88788.
The non-profit will award scholarships to three high school seniors who have witnessed domestic violence at home.
This year, PHHF celebrates 11 years of fighting to stop intimate partner violence.
They will also host their annual 5K Domestic Violence Awareness Charity Event on Saturday, October 11 at Community Park, in Country Club Hills.
Latrice Mosley-Smith hosted the first Purple Hose and Heels 5K in 2014, in honor of her mother Linda Jean Mosley, who died in August 2014.
Mosley-Smith witnessed her mother suffer from physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her father.
Following the success of the first 5K, Mosley-Smith was determined to speak for those that have lost their voice, and she vowed to continue to fight to end the abuse.
Mosley-Smith has become an advocate for domestic violence survivors for the past 10 years.
