BATAVIA, Ill. (WLS) -- A suspect died after shots were fired at and by police Saturday in the west suburbs.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. in the 1200 block of East Wilson Street in Batavia, police said.

A 39-year-old man armed with a firearm allegedly fired at police officers, officials said. Officers also shot their weapons during the incident.

The man died as a result of the incident, police said. He has not yet been identified.

It was not yet known if the suspect died as a result of the officers' gunfire.

Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the police-involved shooting.

No further information was immediately available.

Editorial note: Authorities initially said the man who died was 28 years old and later clarified that he was 39 years old.
