VERNON HILLS, Ill. (WLS) -- No charges are expected after an 81-year-old woman's decomposing body was found following a SWAT response at a north suburban home on Friday, police said.
Vernon Hills police had learned that Mary Barry, an 81-year-old resident of the home in the 500-block of Saddlebrook Lane, had not been heard from for several weeks. She was known to live with her disabled 50-year-old son.
Officers and a social services clinician initially responded to the home for a wellbeing check around 10:15 a.m. Friday.
Responding officers briefly spoke with Barry's son before he closed the door and barricaded himself inside. Police called for assistance after noticing an odor from decomposition.
SWAT officers responded and were able to contain the situation, police said. Authorities found Barry's decomposing body on her bedroom floor.
Officials later found Barry's son with the help of a specialty drone. Officers detained him and took him to a local hospital for evaluation.
Police said preliminary autopsy results suggest that Barry died of natural causes. The investigation found that the last known contact with Barry happened over a month ago.
Investigators believe that Barry's son, who is not being identified by police, did not realize that his mother had died due to a medical condition. He is receiving hospital treatment, and no criminal charges are expected.
The home has been turned over to Barry's family.
