Shooter opens fire on car, injuring 2 women and man near United Center: police

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A shooting injured three people near the United Center in the Near West Side neighborhood early Sunday morning, Chicago police said.

Police said two women were sitting in a parked car outside of the Henry Horner homes on South Honore Street just after 2:15 a.m.

That's when someone inside a silver sedan shot at them, police said.

A resident described the situation as a birthday party that spilled into the street.

"We were just outside. Everyone having fun, dancing, enjoying themselves. And before you know it, we heard, 'Pa, pa, pa, pa, pa,'" said Katrina Powell.

One of the women, a 35-year-old, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

Powell said quick action helped save her life.

"My God, sister reacted so fast and saved her life. She put her pressure on her wound," Powell said. "They did not want to wait on the ambulance. So they end up putting her in someone's car and rushed her to the hospital themselves."

The other woman, a 36-year-old was grazed in the head. She was transported to the same hospital in good condition.

A man standing nearby was also hit by gunfire, police said. He self-transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he is listed in good condition.

No other injuries were reported.

The shooting comes as Windy City Smokeout wraps up at the United Center on Sunday.

Area Three detectives are investigating. Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
