Community mourns security guard killed in robbery
Raymond Murray, who worked as security guard, was shot and killed during an attempted robbery in front of his mother's home.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A community is in mourning after Raymond Murray, 25, was shot and killed near his home in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood during an attempted robbery.

The attack happened around 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning in the 7800-block of South Jeffrey Boulevard, as Murray returned home from work. He had been employed as a certified armed security guard at a Chicago Housing Authority complex.

Police say that someone in a dark-colored car opened fire on Murray as he returned home. Murray died at the scene and relatives say his wallet and phone, along with his licensed handgun, were missing.

Family members say after graduating from Kenwood High School in 2007, Murray attended St. Augustine University in Raleigh, N.C., for two year on a band scholarship in which he played the trombone. He returned home to Chicago to take care of his mother, a registered nurse, after her health began to decline.

Friday, those who knew Murray are remembering him as a kind hearted person who was not in a gang and had no problems with anyone.

A prayer vigil with candles and a balloon launch will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, from noon until 1:28 p.m. at the corner of 78th and Jeffery. According to the family, they chose to end the vigil at 1:28 because that is the time Murray last used his cell phone before his death.
