New running leg for 9-year-old, thanks to bombing survivor

MEDFIELD, Mass. -- A young girl has been given a new lease on life thanks to a Boston Marathon Bombing survivor. WCVB-TV reports that last week, Heather Abbott gifted a third grader with a state-of-the art prosthetic.

Meet nine-year-old Swapna Oslund, a third grader from Beverly, Mass.

You almost wouldn't know that this bundle of energy was born without part of her foot. She eventually had it amputated after undergoing 18 surgeries and breaking several prosthetic feet along the way.

"I broke like five," laughed Oslund.

But now has a new prosthetic running leg, thanks to Marathon Bombing survivor Heather Abbot.

"She really needed a running leg, she was breaking her legs and she was very active," said Abbot.

This all goes back to a year ago, after Abbot spoke to students at Blake Middle School in Medfield. Abbot encouraged them to read the book "The Running Dream" about a high school runner who loses a limb, and that's when the kids decided they wanted to help raise money for the Heather Abbot foundation and for Swapna.

A mini marathon was held as one of those fundraisers for Swapna's new leg. And it provided a chance for the kids to meet Swapna in person.

"Thank you for raising money for my new running leg," said Oslund.

"To know that we helped is pretty powerful," said a student.

The prosthetic leg Swapna received through the foundation would've cost about $20,000. But what her mom says she's received from it has been priceless.

"She bounces everywhere she goes and she's constantly trying to race me," said Oslund's mother.
