GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- After a decade of work, more planes can now fly in and out of Gary Airport in northwest Indiana.
The new extended runway opens to planes on Thursday.
The project was part of a mandate from the Federal Aviation Administration. The 8,900-foot runway allows larger aircrafts to take-off and land, which is expected to provide more options for airplanes going to more destinations.
An official ceremony will be held two weeks from Friday.
