BISHOPVILLE, S.C. -- At least seven inmates were killed and 17 injured after "multiple inmate on inmate altercations" at Lee Correctional Institution overnight Sunday, according to officials.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections wrote on Twitter that the fights broke out just before 8 p.m. on Sunday and were fully contained by around 3 a.m. Monday morning. The department said that the staff and officers who responded are all accounted for and safe.

The maximum security facility houses some of the state's most violent offenders, according to the Associated Press. It's the same prison where one inmate killed another in February.
