FRESNO, Calif. (WLS) -- An animal shelter wrote a scathing open letter to the former owner of a dog that was abandoned along the side of a road near Fresno, California.

Banjo, as he's now known, was dumped this past weekend, according to Kings SPCA-Rescue shelter manager Darlene Laboc.

Laboc says Banjo refused to leave the spot for hours, and several volunteers were needed to lure him away.

Although Banjo is doing well now, he "cried for days" after his rescue, according to ABC News.

"He is so sweet and lovable," Laboc said. Still, she said, people don't understand what happens to an animal when they've abandoned. "They are broken. They are devastated."

Many people have already reached out to adopt Banjo, so his future looks bright. Laboc says she hopes others will be motivated to adopt other pets because of Banjo's story.
