Non-profit offers sports opportunities to those with disabilities

CHICAGO (WLS) -- You may not think of cycling, skiing or kayaking as favorite pastimes for people who use wheelchairs, but a nonprofit organization called Adaptive Adventures is helping make that possible.

At the Title Boxing Club in the West Loop, folks are sweating off the winter weight and maybe even getting rid of a little frustration.

"We're a cardio kickboxing, heavy bag workout. Getting fit without getting hit," said Graham Goy, owner of Title Boxing Club of Chicago.

But you don't have to be a young boxer to get the most out of this workout.

Donald Godshaw says his wheelchair does not stop him from taking on this or any other challenge. He is a board member for Adaptive Adventures, which creates sports opportunities for veterans and people with physical disabilities and their families.

"You need to have something that gives you the gusto of life back and sport does that," Godshaw said. "In the summer, we offer cycling and kayaking and sailing and climbing and boxing."

Boxing will be the group's newest sport.

"We're going to be partnering with Title Boxing in this effort. They've offered their facilities and we're going to put it out there to the veteran community and to the community with disabilities as another alternative that they have," Godshaw said.

On Saturday, May 30, Adaptive Adventures and the Title Boxing Club are teaming up for a fundraiser. Proceeds will benefit Adaptive Adventures and the Wounded Warrior Project. For just $25, anyone looking to get a high-intensity workout while helping two great causes can participate.
