CHICAGO (WLS) -- A newly-opened bakery was a recent target of burglars on the city's South Side.
Chicago police detectives reviewed video Thursday as they investigate the overnight burglary of a bakery at the Hyde Park Courtyard Shops.
The break-in happened at about 12:22 a.m. in the 1500 block of East 55th Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
Chicago police said they responded to a burglar alarm and found that the front door of La Boulangerie bakery was open.
The owner of the bakery told ABC7 the burglars took the company's safe and that hundreds of dollars were stolen.
The co-owner of La Boulangerie, Patricia Pertusot, said she got at security alert from ADT at 12:22 a.m. and could see the intruders on her cameras remotely.
"I told them to call police right away, because I saw two people robbing my bakery," Pertusot said.
Surveillance video showed two people going after the cash register and a safe.
Pertusot said they only opened three months ago.
"What happened tonight is unfortunate, and I'm really upset because of that, but I think I'm not the only one around here," Pertusot said.
Another restaurant in center was also robbed Wednesday night and a pizza place a few blocks away was also hit by burglars overnight.
The opening of La Boulangerie was eagerly anticipated the end of last year as the previous long time bakery had closed.
Alderman Desmon Yancy said he is working with CPD and UChicago police to figure out how to better protect small businesses and the commercial area, which he calls the heartbeat of Hyde Park.
"Looks like there was an opportunity for these criminals to able act, and we want to make sure we have less opportunity for them," Yancy said. "I'll be talking with the University of Chicago shortly."
Some customers hearing the news of the burglary came to show their support Thursday.
"I came here on purpose, because I want to make sure it stays," customer Jo Anne Bloom said.
Despite the setback, La Boulangerie opened as scheduled Thursday. The owner committed to serving their customers.
"We are a French bakery, and we are really happy to be here, and of course I just want to keep going and make people happy around the place," Pertusot said.
There was no one in custody and CPD Area One detectives are investigating.
