ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Some golfers dream of breaking 100, others pray to beat par. And others, like Andy Mickelson, shoot for the PGA tour.
Sometimes golf dreams do come true. Take for instance Andy Mickelson, assistant golf pro at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville. Since this Mokena native was in high school he had that impossible dream to walk those green fairways lined with money.
"After high school was over I went to Bradley University and played there... I was pretty good there. Was all conference my senior year. I wanted to play professional golf. There was no doubt about it, play on the PGA Tour. That was my aspiration... I wasn't good enough," Michelson said.
And besides that, his life changed. He got married and had kids - and now he's director of golf at Mistwood and spends a lot of time teaching us helpless, hopeless and hopeful.
It's not that Andy didn't try to make it on the tour - he did, but it just didn't work out. But last weekend down in Florida, his cup runneth over.
It was a PGA tournament for assistant golf pros from across the country - all of them great golfers - and Andy played the four rounds of his life. He hit fairways, greens and putted like a young tiger. He shot 16 under par.
"I wasn't expecting that going in, that's for sure," Mickelson said. "I just kind of let the score happen."
He won just $9,000, but was that enough to get him dreaming again.
"Yeah, absolutely because there's guys I played with in the past who are out there and being successful. So absolutely you think about it," Mickelson said. "But I'm very comfortable here at Mistwood.
ABC7's Frank Mathie asks: "So you're not going to try for the tour again?"
"Probably not," Mickelson said.
After all, his life is well above par and his scores are still well below.
