Census figures show we're still number three.

But Chicago's place as the third-largest city may not last another decade.

Census figures released Thursday show that Houston is gaining. Chicago's population dropped nearly 7 percent to 2.7 million. Houston's grew by more than 7 percent; its population remains 2.09 million.

Experts predict Houston will overtake Chicago in population sometime in this decade.
