A special committee has appointed a lesbian activist to fill the vacancy in the 14th District House seat.

Kelly Cassidy becomes the third openly gay member of the Illinois State House. She'll replace State Rep. Harry Osterman, who was elected 48th Ward alderman.

The district includes Edgewater, Andersonville and Rogers Park.

Cassidy was chosen from a field of 23 candidates. She's a longtime assistant in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.
