About 100 inmates at the Avenal State Prison began fighting around 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
A prison spokesperson says they're looking into what started the riot.
One of the four injured had to be airlifted out of the prison for treatment.
Ambulances took the other three prisoners to outside hospitals.
Their conditions have not been released.
