A building that has simply been known as the Cook County Criminal Court Building has been officially renamed.

The facility at 26th and California is now The Honorable George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Members of the Cook County Board voted unanimously Thursday to rename the building after the 99-year-old Leighton.

Leighton was the first African-American to sit on the Illinois appellate court and was later named a federal judge.
