NORTH BARRINGTON, Ill. (WLS) -- A man riding an ATV with a 7-year-old boy was critically injured in an accident in North Barrington on Sunday, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.

The 43-year-old man was travelling in the 100-block of North Ravine Lane when he swerved to avoid a dog, causing the ATV to roll over, police said.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene at about 4:15 p.m. and found the man critically injured. The man was transported to Advocate Cordell Medical Center with injuries police describe as life-threatening.

The 7-year-old passenger was treated at the scene by paramedics and was not transported to a hospital. Police said neither the diver nor the boy were wearing helmets.
