Best back-to-school apps from Appolicious

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Appolicious Inc. Managing Editor Brad Spirrison explained how new technology is "flipping" the traditional teaching model.

Apps, videos and other digital media tools can make possible for students to watch lessons as homework. This can reserve classroom time for group projects and individualized instruction.

From kindergarten to 12th grade and beyond, there are thousands of apps and videos that can teach specific subjects, assess individual progress and also help students perform better on Common Core and other standardized tests.

Spirrison featured these apps, which can help students returning to the classroom after summer vacation:

Verizon Educational Tools (iPhone, iPad, Android, Web, free with in-app subscriptions)

Built by Appolicious, Verizon Educational Tools provides educational app and video recommendations for Math, English, Science, and Social Studies subjects across K-thru-12. The app also includes sections for Special Education and Standardized Testing. We work with dozens of teachers and educational specialists to identify the best apps and videos available for iOS, Android and found on YouTube and Vimeo. Each app and video is given a Report Card that is based on Educational Content, Features, and other attributes. We detail whenever an app or video teaches a particular Common Core Standard. The app, which is free to download, also includes exclusive educational app promos from Scholastic, BrainPop, and Tutor.com.

Brainscape (iPad, iPhone, Desktop, free to download with in-app purchases)

Old school flashcards come alive with Brainscape, as the app is able to track which concepts and problems you are picking up more quickly than others. This saves time by avoiding repeating things you already know, and helps people understand what triggers (length of problem, images, etc.) help them retain information. The app is free to download, and comes with several in-app purchase options for subjects like vocabulary, math, geography and foreign languages. Users can also create their own flashcards and answers.

Walmart App - Savings Catcher (iPhone, Android, desktop)

The new Savings Catcher feature from Walmart that just became available to iPhone and Android applications applies to anything you purchase from the store. It's a perfect tool to use when shopping for school supplies. Basically, if you find an advertisement for a product you purchased for at a higher price from Walmart, scan the receipt (or type in the number) and if the ad was valid at the time of purchase Walmart will rebate the money back to you via an eRewards Gift Card. The app is free to use, but you must be registered at Walmart to obtain the deal.
