CHICAGO (WLS) -- It is a tailgate party as you rarely see it: all Big Ten mascots are in one spot to cheer on thousands of runners. It's for the BTN Big 10K at Soldier Field. More than 15,000 runners represent more than 45 states and seven countries. They will not only run in the 10K and walk in the 5K, but join the family-friendly tailgate party afterwards. The 2014 Grand Marshal is Archie Griffin, college football's only two-time Heisman Trophy winner and famed Ohio State alum.
While the event is all about fun, it supports a great cause by raising funds for disabled athletes. Special Olympics Chicago is the race's charity partner for the second year.
Erin Harvego, vice president of marketing at the Big Ten Network, and Susan Nicholl, director of Special Olympics of Chicago, joined us live from Soldier Field during our ABC 7 Eyewitness News Saturday Morning.
