1 killed after car, semi collide and crash into Sauk Village home

SAUK VILLAGE, Ill. (WLS) -- A 28-year-old Chicago woman was killed Wednesday after a crash involving her silver Toyota and a semi-truck, which sent the semi careening into an abandoned home in Sauk Village.

The car wrapped around a tree in the home's yard, pinned between the semi and the tree near Route 394 and Sauk Trail Road.

Neighbors ran over to try to help the victim.

"She wasn't screaming, it was very soft because I was talking to a woman, the ambulance she pulled over, she was licensed, and she went over to the site and she kind of pushed everybody back. And she was like, oh I see her lips moving; she was alive," says Wayne Patterson, who tried to help.

The truck driver, a 68-year-old also from Chicago, refused treatment at the scene. Illinois State Police say both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Two doors down from the home where the crash occurred, new homes were built after a wreck nearly 10 years ago, prompting residents to fight for guard rails.

James Mitchell petitioned for those rails.

"No one did anything," Mitchell said. "The said it was the village's responsibility. The village put it on the county, the county put it on the state, it was a circle.

The crash remains under investigation.
