Caught on camera: Woman robbed at gunpoint during attempted carjacking in West Rogers Park
The armed robbers had already committed two other crimes within minutes of each other, police say
CHICAGO (WLS) -- An attempted carjacking was caught on a neighbor's home security camera as thieves forced a woman from her vehicle at gunpoint on Chicago's North Side.
The suspects weren't able to drive the car and fled the scene without the vehicle on Tuesday in the 6100-block of North Hoyne in West Rogers Park.
Ring camera video shows a small, dark gray car pulling right up next to a white BMW. The victim is a 34-year-old female, who was parking her car.
Too frightened to tell her story on camera, she told ABC7 the offenders jumped out of the gray vehicle and one pushed a gun into to her stomach while the other pushed a gun into her chest while both demanded her keys. The victim was on the phone with her mother during the incident.
"All I hear is she is like, 'Mom,' then she's like, 'Take it, take it,' and some kind of instinct said something was wrong," the victim's mother said.
Her daughter got away safely. The offenders could not start the BMW and were only able to get away with the victim's purse.
According to police, by the time the offenders had robbed the 34-year-old, they had already committed two other crimes within minutes of each other in the same area on Tuesday morning. In the 2500 block of W. Granville, a 34-year-old female was robbed at gunpoint and a few minutes later, a man delivering packages was carjacked in the 5700 block of N. Campbell.
"Even if you happen to be in some of the safest areas, no one wants to see any incidents of crime, so we want to make sure we are proactive, we are talking to neighbors," 40th Ward Ald. Andre Vasquez said.
Vasquez said police need more video to help solve these crimes.
"What we tell our neighbors is to really take advantage of the city's program for reimbursing people purchasing cameras," he said. "We want to make sure your cameras are facing the front of your house, plus your alley."
The female victim of the incident caught on the Ring camera said police have been in contact with her every day since the robbery happened. She said police are confident the offenders will caught soon, but more evidence, like video, is needed.
