Woman fatally shot at major intersection in Edgewater ID'd
CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 21-year-old woman fatally shot at a busy intersection in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood overnight has been identified.
A victim's advocate confirmed the woman's name Monday on behalf of the victim's mother, who does not speak English. Karina Sorina had a 5-year-old son and worked at the Naf Naf Grille in west suburban Naperville.
People who knew Sorina gathered outside her home in the city's West Rogers Park neighborhood crying. Her family said they were shocked by her death and asked for privacy.
The victim was riding in a silver Jeep that had stopped at the intersection of Ridge, Peterson and Paulina around 12:55 a.m. Monday. Police said that's when a man in a gray sedan pulled up next to her, got out of his car and opened fire, firing five shots.
Sorina was shot in the head. She was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she died.
"People are not prepared for this," said Dawn Valenti, crisis responder, Chicago Survivors. "Funeral planning, medical examiner's office - they seen her when she was alive, tomorrow they gotta go look at her, and she doesn't have breath anymore."
Police said her boyfriend, a documented gang member, was driving the Jeep. He was not hurt.
Tracey Alcoser, who lives nearby, said she heard all of the shots.
"I just heard a 'bap bap bap bap bap.' Five times," Alcoser said. "I've been here since 2005. Really, this is the first incident. It's a nice area, really friendly. Dog-friendly and everything. I couldn't imagine. I live right there. What if it was me?"
"That just goes to show you that violence can touch any part of the city in anybody's neighborhood at any time. Nobody is exempt from this violence," Valenti said.
Police did not release a description of the suspect. No one is in custody. Area North detectives are handling the investigation.
CHICAGO VIOLENCE
This shooting comes on the heels of crime numbers released for the month of April. There were 36 murders, 253 shootings and 311 shooting victims in Chicago last month.
Police said the murder rate in April increased only 3 percent compared to the same month in 2015. The department blamed a majority of the violence on gang members with illegal guns.
Over the weekend, police said at least two men were killed and 25 people were wounded across the city.
The latest homicide happened during a Washington Park neighborhood shootout Saturday afternoon on the South Side.
A 36-year-old man and 17-year-old boy were firing on each other about 1:20 p.m. in the 100 block of West Garfield.
The man, identified as Deitrick Stogner, was shot in the chest and side and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:24 p.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. Stogner lived in the 4600 block of South Prairie.
The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to the same hospital in good condition, police said. Charges were pending against him.
The weekend's other fatal attack happened about 2 a.m. Saturday in the North Lawndale neighborhood, where a 30-year-old Southwest Side man was gunned down.
Lamar Watson was standing outside in the 2200 block of South Kolin when someone walked up and shot him in the head, authorities said.
Watson was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 6:30 a.m. He lived around the corner in the 2200 block of South Kirkland.
The most recent nonfatal shootings happened Sunday evening on the West and Far South sides.
About 9:40 p.m., a 65-year-old man standing in the backyard of a West Pullman neighborhood home was shot in the lower back and right arm by someone in the alley of the 12100 block of South Wentworth. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
At 7:05 p.m., a 36-year-old man walked into Loretto Hospital after an Austin neighborhood shooting in the first block of North Long Avenue. He told detectives he had been sitting in a parked vehicle when three people walked up and one of them shot him in the chest and shoulder. The documented gang member was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
About 5:30 p.m., a 27-year-old woman was shot in the right arm by someone in a silver van while she was driving in the 200 block of North Homan in East Garfield Park. She took herself to the University of Illinois Hospital, where she was listed in good condition, police said.
At least 21 more people have been wounded in other shootings since 8 p.m. Friday.
