CHICAGO (WLS) -- Charges are pending against a man arrested in connection with a fight that escalated to a deadly shooting at a popular South Side bar.
The suspect was taken into custody hours after fleeing the scene.
Police said shots were fired around 1:40 a.m. Friday, after two 29-year-old men got into a fight with a third man inside 50 Yard Line, a bar and grill located in the city's Grand Crossing neighborhood near East 75th Street and South Michigan Avenue.
One 29-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and rushed in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, where he later died. His identity has not been released. The other 29-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his legs. He was taken in serious condition to Stroger, where his condition stabilized.
A 26-year-old woman, who is not related to the two victims, ran from the bar when the shots rang out. She was accidentally struck by a car as she crossed the street. She was able to speak with police at the scene before she was taken to Stroger, where she is listed in good condition.
Sharon Brown, who works at 50 Yard Line, was in the bathroom when the gunman opened fire. She said when she came out of the bathroom, the scene was chaotic. Everyone ducked and ran for cover.
Thomasina Hunt, who witnessed the shooting, said young people with guns don't understand what they're doing when they carry a weapon.
"You don't need older people telling these young people what to do. You need younger people, that got what's going on in the neighborhood, in the hood, telling young people what to do. The young people aren't going to listen to the older people. THey're not going to listen to them at all," Hunt said.
Edward Wicks, who lives in the neighborhood, said this is another example of the violence plaguing the city.
"It's not just this community. It's happening everywhere - the North Side, the South Side. So I wouldn't just say it's this community. It's just the nature of how things are going today," Wicks said.
Police said it is unclear whether the two shooting victims knew each other. Area South detectives are looking into what started the fight.
