Man killed in Uptown among 16 shot in 14 hours

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 19-year-old man is dead after he was shot twice in the North Side Uptown neighborhood early Friday.

Police were called to the 4800-block of N. Kenmore at 1:36 a.m. Friday. The victim, later identified as Shaquon Thomas, was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital where he died.

Police say the victim was approached from behind by a gunman who shot him and fled.

No one is in custody, and police say it appears to be a gang-related shooting.

The shooting capped a day of violence in Chicago that saw at least 15 people shot.

At least 14 people were shot across Chicago between noon and 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

The last shooting left five people wounded in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

About 10:30 p.m., two men and two women were standing in the 6200 block of South Honore when they all "heard shots and felt pain," police said. A 2-year-old was also caught in the crossfire. The girl suffered a graze wound and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, police said.

One man, 25, was shot several times and taken to Holy Cross Hospital in serious condition, police said. The other man, 31, was shot in the right leg and also taken to Holy Cross. His condition had stabilized.

The women, both 22, were taken to Stroger Hospital. One was shot in the buttocks and the other was shot in both legs. Their conditions had both stabilized, police said.

An hour earlier, three men were shot in the South Shore neighborhood.

About 9:30 p.m., the three were standing outside in the 2100 block of East 67th Street when a male shot them from a nearby alley, police said.

One man, 28, was shot in the buttocks and taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. The other two, 30 and 31, were shot in the upper right arm and left thigh, respectively. They were both taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The conditions of all three had stabilized early Friday, police said.

At 9:10 p.m., a man was shot while riding in a vehicle in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

The 23-year-old was in a vehicle traveling north in the 5800 block of South Wentworth when a dark-colored sedan pulled up alongside and someone inside opened fire, police said.

The man was driven to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center with a gunshot wound to the upper back, police said. His condition had stabilized.

Two teenage boys were shot Thursday evening in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood.

The boys, 15 and 16, were shot about 5:30 p.m. in the 800 block of East 65th Street after someone approached and opened fire, police said.

The 15-year-old was shot in the leg and taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.

The older teen suffered a graze wound to the armpit and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was in good condition, police said.

Another South Shore shooting left two men wounded earlier in the afternoon.

The men, 25 and 31, were standing outside in the 7400 block of South Colfax about 3:50 p.m. when someone in a passing vehicle fired shots, police said.

The 31-year-old was shot in the leg and waist, while the 25-year-old was shot in the waist and ankle, police said. Both were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where their conditions had stabilized.

They are both documented gang members, police said.

About an hour earlier, a man was shot while walking in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The 27-year-old was in the 3100 block of North Lavergne about 2:40 p.m. when he got into an argument with someone who pulled out a handgun and fired shots, police said.

The man was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.

Thursday's first shooting happened about noon in Rogers Park on the North Side.

A 47-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and hand in the 1300 block of West Pratt, police said.

He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston where his condition stabilized, police said. Details on the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available.
