12 dead, 28 wounded in Chicago shootings in 2 days

CHICAGO -- Twelve people were killed and 28 others, including a 10-year-old boy, were wounded in shootings across Chicago on Monday and Tuesday.

A 25-year-old man was shot to death Tuesday night in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side.

Cortez Tate was shot in the head at 8:27 p.m. in the 7300 block of North Rogers, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Tate, of the 7600 block of North Sheridan, was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 11:24 p.m., authorities said. Additional information was not immediately available.

Less than 20 minutes earlier, a man was fatally shot in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.

About 8:10 p.m., 32-year-old Demarco V. Kennedy was in a home in the 600 block of East 102nd Place when he was shot in the neck, authorities said.

Kennedy, who lived in the same block as the shooting, was taken to Trinity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:14 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, a man was killed in an Englewood neighborhood shooting on the South Side.

Julius Coleman, 18, was on the street after getting dropped off from a vehicle at 2:07 p.m. in the 5600 block of South May when someone inside a passing blue vehicle began shooting, according to police and the medical examiner's office.

Coleman, of the 6000 block of South Green, was shot in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 2:56 p.m., authorities said.

Most recently, a 30-year-old man was shot and critically wounded in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. He was sitting in a vehicle at 10:56 p.m. parked in the 5900 block of West Division when someone exited another vehicle nearby and opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the head and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was listed in critical condition.

At 10:26 p.m., a 17-year-old girl was shot in a separate Austin attack. She suffered a gunshot wound to the back in the 1000 block of North Leamington, police said. The teenager was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in "guarded" condition. Further details were not immediately available.

About 15 minutes earlier, a man and woman were shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The 24-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were both wounded in the shooting about 10:10 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Karlov, police said. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the left shoulder and was taken to Stroger Hospital. The woman was shot in the left leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Both of their conditions were stabilized.

About 9:45 p.m., a 26-year-old man was walking in the 3900 block of West Grenshaw in North Lawndale when he heard gunfire and realized he'd been shot in the right leg. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said, adding that the man is a documented gang member.

At 9:43 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the right leg in the 5300 block of West Potomac in Austin, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. Additional information was not available.

Less than 30 minutes earlier, a 20-year-old man was wounded in an Englewood neighborhood shooting on the South Side. He was shot in the right leg at 9:19 p.m. in the 6600 block of South Halsted, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

At 6:42 p.m., two men, both 20 years old, were shot in the 2900 block of North Linder in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said. They were both taken to Community First Medical Center in good condition. One was shot in the arm, while the other was shot in the arm and hand.

About 20 minutes earlier, a man was left in critical condition after he was shot in Austin. The 36-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle in the 5500 block of West Jackson about 6:24 p.m. when he was shot in the back, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Loretto Hospital.

About six hours earlier, two teenagers were wounded in a drive-by shooting in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. The pair was standing on the sidewalk in the 600 block of South California at 12:16 p.m. when a gray vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots, police said. Both teens took themselves to Mount Sinai Hospital. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the chest, back and hip and his condition was stabilized. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the left index finger and left buttocks, and listed in good condition.

Earlier Tuesday, a drive-by shooting left two people wounded in Lawndale. The 16-year-old boy and 24-year-old man were walking to the store about 3:50 a.m. in the 3700 block of West Ogden when a vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire, police said. The teenager was shot in the right leg, while the man suffered a graze wound to the right heel. They were both taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the man's condition was stabilized. The teenager's condition was not known.

Tuesday's first shooting happened in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side. A 25-year-old man was walking at 12:48 a.m. on the sidewalk in the 400 block of East 71st Street when he heard gunfire and realized he'd been shot in the hand, police said. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

The latest fatal Monday shooting happened when one man was killed and two others were critically wounded in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The three were standing on the sidewalk at 11:17 p.m. in the 9400-block of South LaSalle when a blue car drove past and someone inside opened fire in their direction, according to Chicago police. Anthony Hatchett, 44, was shot in the head, and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 12:11 a.m. Tuesday, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. He lived in the 10600 block of South Parnell.

A 28-year-old man who was shot in the back was also taken to Christ Medical Center, police said. The third man, 30, was taken to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to the right arm and left leg. Both were listed in critical condition.

About an hour before that, a man was shot to death in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

Erik L. Williams, 27, was standing on a front porch at 10:18 p.m. in the 1800-block of West 58th when someone in a gray sedan fired shots at him, authorities said. Williams, of the 1200 block of West 71st Place, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the side of his torso and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11 p.m.

At 9:24 p.m., a man was shot to death in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side.

John Hosey Jr., 28, was driving in the 3500-block of West Grenshaw when he heard gunfire and felt pain, authorities said. Hosey suffered gunshot wounds to the left arm, torso and back, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:32 p.m., according to police and the medical examiner's office. He lived in the 3900 block of West Fillmore.

Less than an hour earlier, a man was killed and a teenage boy wounded in a West Garfield Park neighborhood shooting.

The 28-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 100-block of South Kilpatrick about 8:45 p.m. when a male walked up and started shooting at him, police said. The man was shot multiple times and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His name had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

A 17-year-old boy who was driving past the scene when the shooting started was also struck in the left ankle. He drove himself to Loretto Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Earlier Monday evening, a 24-year-old man was shot to death in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Denzell Mickel was shot in the right arm, the left side of his neck and his head about 7:30 p.m. in the 3200-block of West 83rd Street, authorities said. Mickel, of the 7000 block of South Honore, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Another man was shot and killed less than 10 minutes earlier in a separate West Garfield Park attack.

The 22-year-old was in the 800-block of South Springfield at 7:22 p.m. when someone in a gray vehicle shot him in the back and right arm, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

A 61-year-old man was shot to death Monday afternoon in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.

At 1:18 p.m., Michael Lucas was on a front porch in the 9100 block of South Cottage Grove when someone fired shots in his direction, police and the medical examiner's office said. Lucas, who lived on the same block as the shooting, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:35 p.m. Police said he was not the intended target of the shooting.

Two other people were killed in shootings early Monday morning.

William Villa, 25, was killed while driving in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood. He was in a black SUV in the 1100-block of North Western Avenue at 2:27 a.m. when he stopped at a red light at Western and Division, according to police and the medical examiner's office. A dark car pulled alongside his vehicle and someone inside opened fire.

The SUV then pulled forward and crashed into a traffic light in the northeast corner of the intersection. Villa was shot in the head, but three female passengers in the SUV were not injured. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died about half an hour later, according to the medical examiner's office.

The day's first shooting was a man shot to death in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

Officers responding about 2:25 a.m. to a call of a person shot in the 3200-block of West Walnut found 43-year-old Lee Martin lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds to the head and back, authorities said. Martin, who lived in the 6500 block of South Loomis, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:39 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Among the non-fatal shootings, a 10-year-old boy was critically wounded Monday night while he was on his family's front porch in West Garfield Park.

Tavon Tanner was standing outside the family's home at 10:18 p.m. in the 3900-block of West Polk when shots rang out and he was struck in the back, according to Chicago Police and his mother, Mellanie Washington. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

"I've got faith in God that he's going to pull through," Washington said outside the hospital while Tavon was in surgery early Tuesday.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened late Monday in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side. At 11:19 p.m., a 31-year-old man was standing on a corner in the 6400-block of South Maryland when he heard gunfire and realized he'd been shot in the left arm, according to police. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.
