CHICAGO -- Freezing rain could make travel hazardous across the Chicago area Saturday morning.
Though much of the precipitation has changed to a light drizzle, the National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory for the entire Chicago area, as well as southeast Wisconsin and northwest Indiana.
"The line of freezing rain moves in just after midnight, most of it will be out of here early tomorrow morning. If you're making plans for the lights festival, it looks pretty good," said ABC7 meteorologist Jerry Taft.
Freezing rain happens when the precipitation falls as rain, but the surfaces it reaches are so cold that the rain freezes on impact.
"In my opinion, this is one of the most hazardous types of precipitation," ABC7 meteorologist Tracy Butler said.
Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads, and slow down and use caution while driving, though salt trucks were seen on many expressways earlier Saturday morning.
