CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. (WLS) -- A Chihuahua that somehow made its way onto a California highway divider has been reunited with its owners.

"Charm" apparently escaped from the back yard and ran across several lanes of busy traffic Highway 680 before climbing onto the divider.

A photo of a California Highway Patrol officer coaxing the dog off the divider with a protein bar went viral on Twitter when the dog was first rescued.

Two girls and their father picked up Charm from Contra Costa Animal Services earlier this week.

"We are ALL very happy for the family, who have learned a very valuable and expensive lesson in pet licensing, microchipping, spaying, good fencing, and the power of social media," the shelter wrote on its Facebook page.
