Durbin holds student debt discussion in Naperville

NAPERVILLE (WLS) -- Senator Dick Durbin held a roundtable discussion with college students about an issue that's a big deal to many of them: student debt.

He visited North Central College in Naperville. Durbin is promoting new legislation to allow current student loan holders to lower their interest rate by refinancing their loans.

"When you get the interest rate down, you get a better chance to pay off the principal. If the interest rate is too high, some people, all they pay is interest and the principal is never reduced," said Sen. Durbin.

Durbin is also supporting a bill requiring colleges and universities to give students more information to make an informed decision about the loans they take out.
