EAST ORANGE -- A blinding orange glow and the sound of wood snapping, startled many on North 17th Street in East Orange, New Jersey on Sunday morning. When they looked out of their windows, they couldn't believe what they saw - 3 homes, side by side, blanketed in heavy fire and smoke.

The fire ended up killing 5 people 79-year-old Alice Horton, Randy and Ronnie Horton, 20-year-old old Breione Love and her 6 week old daughter Lanore.

"I lost my mother-in-law, my niece, lost my cousin, it ain't right," said an unnamed family member.

"I was nervous because it was really close, coming in my kitchen, I could smell it, that's how close it was. On the third floor, you could see fire busting out of the windows, debris everywhere flying," said neighbor Chante Williams.

All day, firefighters were up against very dangerous conditions as they searched through what was left of the homes.

"Most of the fire was in the rear of the building, but she had heavy smoke and fire starting to come from the windows in her area, but fortunately they were able to get to her," said Deputy Chief Christopher Weiss of the East Orange Fire Department.

The Red Cross is providing emergency assistance for two families.
