Deadly Garfield Ridge fire started in kitchen, investigation continues

Sunday afternoon the Chicago Fire Department passed out smoke detectors to residents in the city's Garfield Ridge neighborhood.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A deadly fire apparently started in the kitchen of a Southwest Side home, but investigators are still looking for the cause.



Theresa Valenti, 87, returned home and discovered the fire about 6:30 Saturday night in the 5600-block of South Mayfield in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.



She ran to a neighbor's for help, and then tried to run inside to save her husband. Sam Valenti. 89, died and his wife was critically injured.



Sunday afternoon the Chicago Fire Department returned to the neighborhood and passed out smoke detectors to neighbors.
