Create ID cards for kids, install safety seats at K.I.S.S.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Create ID cards for your kids and properly install child safety seats at the first Kids Identification and Safety Seat event this weekend.

The Illinois Tollway and Illinois State Police are kicking off the first of 13 K.I.S.S. events at the Ikea in Bolingbrook from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur explained that properly installed safety seats eliminate potential distractions for parent drivers and reduce the risk of injury. State police said in a statement that 90 percent of the child safety seats they inspect are improperly installed.

"I understand how difficult it can be to install child safety seats correctly but, when used properly, they are proven to save lives," Lafleur said in the statement. "Our goal this summer is to help parents keep their kids safe while on the road and, along with our free kid's ID service, give parents peace of mind."

More than 2,100 children - almost two children per minute - are reported missing every day in the United States, according to the statement. An estimated 34 percent of American parents wouldn't be able to accurately describe their child to law enforcement, including details of exact height and weight, as well as their child's eye color.

Lafleur said ID cards for children can help locate them faster if they go missing.
