CHICAGO (WLS) -- Thousands attended the Obama Presidential Center Grand Opening ceremony Thursday.

The center opens to the public Friday.

Road closures, parking restrictions in place ahead of Obama Presidential Center opening

The Obama Presidential Center opens soon, and there are openings and closings to navigate.

Monday, June 8 at 6 a.m. - Friday, June 19 at 6 a.m.
Blackstone, from Midway Plaisance to 60th St. - no parking both sides of the street.
60th St. from Dorchester to Blackstone.

Obamas speak at Salt Shed ahead of grand opening

The Obamas have had a busy since they arrived to Chicago last weekend.

Former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama surprised former administration and campaign staffers at a reunion event at the Salt Shed on Wednesday.

Obama Presidential Center a 'beacon of hope to the world,' Jarrett says

Valerie Jarrett, the CEO of the Obama Foundation, said many people have lots of emotion on seeing the presidential center for the first time.

"In part because it is a trip down memory lane but it is also a way for them to interact and to tell their stories see their stories and the stories that we well and feel this connection and a sense of belonging and fun. People all over this campus are having a terrific time and it's a gift to Chicago but it is also a beacon of hope to the world."

Head of Obama Presidential Center excited as grand opening arrives

The Obama Presidential Center's head of operations John Roberson said he is excited that the big day is here.

"This has been a long time coming," Roberson said. "There is so many people who have put in so much work to bring this concept to fruition. Obviously, president and Mrs. Obama, starting with their idea of what they wanted this presentation to be and to be intentional about locating it here on the South Side of Chicago," Robinson said. "As someone born in Chicago, raised by Chicago, this is very personal for me, so to have the honor and the responsibility to steward this iconic global, cultural civic institution, couldn't be more excited."
