Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

3 injured, 1 seriously, in Auburn Gresham shooting: Chicago police

Three people were injured, one seriously, in a shooting in Chicago's Auburn Gresham neighborhood early Friday morning, Chicago police said.

The victims were sitting in a parked vehicle in the 8300-block of South Ashland Avenue just after 1 a.m. when shots were fired, CPD said.

A Chicago shooting injured 3, 1 seriously, on Ashland in Auburn Gresham early Friday morning, CPD said. It was not clear what led up to the incident.

A 40-year-old woman was shot in the head, and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition; a 30-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and taken to Christ in good condition; and a 40-year-old man was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, with a gunshot wound to his left hand.

No one was in custody later Friday morning, and Area One detectives are investigating what led up to the incident.

Boy, 3, shot on NW Side

A three-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting while in a car with his mother on the Northwest Side Thursday night, Chicago police said.

Police said the boy was with his mother in a car in the 100--block of North Kostner Avenue when a male suspect in a pickup truck fired shots.

The boy's father was in a dispute with the gunman before the shooting, police said.

The boy was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition with a graze wound to the left leg, police said.

Teen shot in Uptown, Chicago police say

A teenager was shot on the city's North Side on Wednesday, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened around 9:31 p.m. in the 5000-block of N. Winthrop Avenue.

The 15-year-old boy told police he was standing outside when he heard gunshots and realized he was shot in the buttocks.

The teen was taken to the hospital for treatment, he is expected to be okay.

No one is in custody.

Man shot in Downtown robbery, police say

A man was shot, robbed while walking in the West Loop, Chicago police said.

The crime happened around 10:35 p.m. in the 300-block of Clinton Street on Tuesday.

The offender approached the 35-year-old victim, demanded his things then shoot him in the leg. The shooter then ran away.

The victim was taken to the hospital. He is expected to be okay.

No one in custody.
