Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

2 men shot, 1 fatally, in North Lawndale, Chicago police say

Two men were shot, one fatally, on Chicago's West Side Thursday night, Chicago police said.

The men, ages 39 and 42, were standing in the street in the 1500-block of South Kenneth Avenue in North Lawndale just before 11:15 p.m., when a suspect approached and fired shots, CPD said.

The 39-year-old was shot multiple times, including in the back of the head.

He was treated by Chicago fire crews and taken to Mt. Sinai hospital, where he died.

The 42-year-old was shot in the stomach, shoulder and buttocks. He was taken by CFD to Mt. Sinai, where he is in fair condition.

There is no one in custody, and Area Four Detectives are investigating.

Man shot outside CTA Blue Line station in Logan Square: Chicago police

A 34-year-old man was shot near the CTA Blue Line station in Logan Square Thursday night, Chicago police said.

The man was standing on the sidewalk in the 2600-block of North Milwaukee Avenue about 10:20 p.m., when a suspect got out of a vehicle and fired shots, police said.

The suspect then drove away.

The man was shot in the lower back, treated by Chicago fire crews and taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital.

He's in good condition.

There is no one in custody, and Area Five Detectives are investigating.

Man found shot to death in Bronzeville, police say

A man was found shot to death on Wednesday evening in Bronzeville, police said.

The 44-year-old victim was found inside a parked car in the 4000-block of S. King Drive around 5:19 p.m.

No one is in custody. CPD Area One Detectives are investigating.

Woman with FOID card shoots, kills intruder during home invasion, police say

A break-in suspect was shot to death on Wednesday morning on the city's West Side, according to Chicago police.

Two suspects broke into a home around 6:41 a.m. in the 700-block of Laramie Avenue on Wednesday morning.

As the suspects pulled out guns, a 23-year-old woman in the house also pulled out a gun.

Chicago police said the woman has a valid FOID card.

At some point the three started to shoot at each other when one of the male suspects was shot in the chest. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
