CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Man, 18, shot to death in South Side house, Chicago police say

An 18-year-old was shot to death on Tuesday night on the city's South Side, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened around 10:56 p.m. in a house in the 8500-block of Parnell Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood.

The man was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

No one in custody. CPD Area Two detectives are investigating.

Argument leads to deadly shooting in Bronzeville, Chicago police say

A fight led to a deadly shooting on the city's South Side, according to Chicago police.

The shooting happened around 3:34 a.m. on Wednesday in the 500-block of 47th Street in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

Two men were arguing, when one of started to shoot.

The victim, a 26-year-old man, was shot in the chest and an arm. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

No one is in custody.

Driver shot near Chicago's Chinatown Gateway

A man was shot while driving on the city's South Side, according to Chicago police.

The shooting happened in the 2200-block of Wentworth Avenue around 1:40 a.m. near Chicago's Chinatown Gateway.

A man, 38, was driving when a man started to shoot at him, police said.

The man was shot in the chest and taken to the hospital in fair condition.

No one in custody. CPD Area One detectives are investigating.

2 killed, including tow truck driver, in Far South Side shootout

Two people, including a tow-truck driver, were killed in a shootout on the Far South Side Wednesday morning, Chicago police said.

Police responded to the 11300-block of South Lowe Avenue at about 2:29 a.m.

Officers found a 59-year-old man operating a tow truck shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene and a 45-year-old man who was shot multiple times and transported to Advocate Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators said that there was an exchange of gunfire between the two men.
