Illinois' 9th Congressional District race covers northern parts of the city, stretching up into the northwest suburbs.

The Democratic primary competition is one of the most competitive races Illinois has seen in quite some time. That may be because this congressional seat is open for the first time in 26 years, and there are 15 candidates on the ballot hoping to replace Schakowsky.
One of the front runners is Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, who is also a former Illinois state senator and is endorsed by Schakowsky. ABC7 was at his election night headquarters at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Among the other candidates who have raised quite a bit of money enough to buy television ads is former journalist Kat Abughazaleh, who is expected to do well. Others expected to do well are current Illinois state Sen. Laura Fine and gun control advocate Phil Andrew.
