The family of Muhatir Rauf said it is seeking peace, not vengeance in the college student's murder.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Mokaram Rauf was walking with his brother, Muhatir, when they were jumped in Rogers Park.

Muhatir, a 23-year-old pre-med student at nearby Loyola University and recent Northwestern University graduate, was fatally shot during the attempted robbery Friday night.

"When we talk about moving on, it is not about playing the blame game. It's not about catching the perpetrators and letting that be the only thing. It's about understanding why this happened," Mokaram Rauf said. "We see this brutal act as being symptomatic of a greater epidemic of poverty and violence pervading Chicago."

Chicago police said Muhatir believed the gun wasn't real and grabbed it from the offender. It went off during their struggle and he was shot in the head and chest, police said.

No one has been charged in the murder.

The Rauf family said it is seeking peace, not vengeance. A memorial service was held Tuesday at Loyola University.
